Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/26/2012

Number: 1

46 degrees this morning, no wind-- 1 small, rotund, female guest in the East habitat, arrives for breakfast at 7:18 AM. Believe she arrived late yesterday afternoon, as I noticed her in the East habitat last night around 7:15 PM. We do not usually have 'guests' after Sept. 22--so perhaps the large red flags are working to attract hungry, tired, migrators. As a Master Gardener, my habitats are still filled with numerous blooming flowers: Pink turtleheads, Pink Lantana,
Dicentria luxuriant, Dicentria sandens, Red geraniums, petunias, Black and Blue Salvia. If I could plant only one plant for the hummingbirds--it would be Black and Blue Salvia. Our small guest in the East habitat is sipping nectar from the Black and Blue salvia, and all East habitat arrivals visit the Black and Blue salvia, before the nectar feeders. Yesterday afternoon, a tiny hummer appeared at the dining room window and performed the elaborate and intricate 'window dance' we only see this behavior/art when a winged wonder is leaving. It is a pleasure and honor to be late season hummingbird hosts.
