Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/23/2012

Number: 7000

We were back out at Westhampton Beach along the ocean over the weekend. On Saturday the 22th, there were sporadic sightings throughout the day. Maybe several hundred for the day. Sunday the 23rd was a bit more busy. Over the peak four hours from about noon to later , we counted about 20-30 per minute average. Doing some rough calculations, we would estimate that there there were 7,000 to 8,000 for the 12 hour period.

This show was nothing compared to the sightings we had on Wednesday the 19th. The amounts of Monarchs were astounding and hundreds of times more. Maybe, not in the millions, but certainaly in the hundreds of thousands for the day.
