Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/27/2012

Number: 3000

Early this morning the monarchs started lifting off from their roosts in Cape May Point, circling in the air. Some butterflies went across the Bay to Delaware, while others turned back and re-settled into the gardens and ivy flowers. While observing there was anywhere from 150-200 butterflies in the air above us. When looking through binoculars you could see the monarchs stretched out all across the Bay and dunes along the Point. This was the first day in the last 5 days that the monarchs spread out more in the local gardens to nectar but the vast majority kept returning to the ivy flowers. It was another special day in Cape May.
