Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 09/27/2012

Number: 8

We have two Rufus hummingbirds. One female, one young male developing throat feathers. 6 others that look like female Ruby-throats are still here. The four that have been here since the 14th.of August claim their tree and love to fight any new migrating hummingbirds. PBS did a special last year about hummingbirds staying more in the lower U.S wintertime. Changing their inborn instincts because of hummingbird feeders provided year round. We had a Broad-tail stay all winter of 2010 until the Ruby-throats migration overlapped in Feb.in our garden of red honeysuckle here in Houston. The broad-tail came back for a day Dec.2, 2012 during his migration northward. How do I know it was him again? Broad-tail loved taking a bath in the fish pond fountain daily. He stopped in for the bath in the fountain. A male Rufus was also at our feeder in Jan. 2012
Journey North please keep the hummingbird reports OPEN for winter time hummingbird sightings.
