Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/28/2012

Number: 12

With night temps in the lower 30º we still have several hummers feeding at our feeders. Most of the birds that were our summer residents have gone but have many stragglers that stop and rest and calorie up before moving on. They are so skittish while we are around the feeders while our summer feeders did not even notice us while we were close to the feeders. The present birds are so combative - fighting and making contact during their fights even knocking an opponent to the ground. Today I counted 12 birds at our two feeders. We take the feeders in at night to prevent the hummers from eating very cold nectar and replace them before daylight the next morning. The birds spend several minutes feeding at the feeders at each feeding and they are so vocal during this time of feeding. The temps in SW Indiana dipped into the low 30ºlast week which really lowered the numbers at the feeders but we have 60-70º during the day and 50º at night so more birds are are arriving each day.
