update: 9/28/12 I returned to my front yard and observed the tree across the street where the Monarchs are flocking. The tree I had not noticed before is covered in sweet autumn clematis. Not only are the Monarchs feasting, but the tree is surrounded by wasps, yellow jackets, etc. I took some pictures and will post them later.
