Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 09/29/2012

Number: 25

Well today (Sept. 29) brings rain and a major dip in the total numbers of hummers feeding at our house. With 13 feeders spread around the 250' of perimeter of our roof-line, we estimated ~100 tiny hungry birds on the 26th & 27th. The 28th showed about a 50% drop in numbers. Of the estimated 100 hummers, there was one Rufous, a couple of Allens, 3 male Rubies, ~70 female Rubies, and ~20 sub adult male Rubies. This was our best guess on Wednesday and Thursday evening using up close viewing, photography and binoculars. Today (Saturday 29th), a dramatic drop is being seen with only an occasional handful at most feeders. The feeders on the north side of the house are each guarded by a single female Ruby, so attempts to feed from them are mostly pointless.
