An abundance of monarchs in Brevard, NC
On 9-25 and 9-26, two friends and I captured, tagged and released 84 monarchs on the site at route 276 heading south toward Caesar's Head, SC--10 miles away. There were a lot more than that, but I ran out of tags (I ordered more)! Of these, there were 66 males and 18 females. We also found a mating pair. Other than some raggedness and a few slim abdomens, they looked healthy. They will fill up on the plentiful asters, golden rod and butterfly bushes on their flyway. They were so abundant that one of the women just stood at the aster bush and plucked them off. She handed them to her sister, I tagged and recorded. A most wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The whole thing was video taped.
I'm hearing reports of hundreds migrating through our mountains. Another friend told me there was another group of them at Henderson's Nursery in Rosman, NC and Ina Warren took those on (GO INA!!!). I'm still seeing a few flying around the city of Brevard.
