i had taken 3 preschoolers into a wooded area near the state lake, where monarchs are often tagged in the fall. we stayed for about half an hour. it was a cool, overcast morning. we saw 8 monarchs in an adjacent field of wildflowers, and observed a greater number (approximately 40) in the wooded area - red cedar, pine, oak, and walnut. the numbers were nothing like i had observed in previous years. i would like to hope that we were ahead of, or behind the major migration.
