Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/29/2012

Number: 400

Today, a friend and I left the Eastern Shore of Virginia by boat and visited Tangier Island, located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. We headed to the south end of the island to the beach when at the road's end, we spotted hundreds and hundreds of monarchs circling and roosting in an area of trees just in front of the marsh area. It was the last "shelter" spot before the beach and open water, and I suppose they were trying to hunker down because of the cool, windy and overcast day. (This was around 2:00 PM) It was especially exciting for me, because it was my first real "mass" observation! Yay! What a gift! I'll plan to head to Assateague Island tomorrow to see if the Cape May "visitors" have started to arrive! The ones today seemed to be following a "shortcut" route!
