Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/30/2012

Number: 3

I saw three females rufous and black-chinned hummingbirds at the feeders this morning. I am still maintaining four feeders, they are each separated by several feet to prevent guarding. Many of the late-commers are very territorial and want their own feeder, especially the juvenile rufous males. A couple nights ago a little female settled onto the perch of one feeder about an hour or so before sunset. It was so sweet to watch her; she was completely warn out, she just sat and rested on the perch drinking occasionally until it got too dark, then she settled into our shrubs to sleep before another long flight the next day. I always hope they make a safe trip.
