Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 10/02/2012

Number: 1

We haven't spotted any adults yet, but we have found 3 monarch caterpillars and 7 more eggs. One cat is now a chrysalis, the other two are about 4-5 days olds. Normally, we have way more eggs and cats on our multitude of milkweed plants by this time, but this year, the monarchs are not nearly as abundant as the last 10 years (since we have been watching for them). We always bring them in or into the classrooms, so that we can keep them from predation. It does look like the ants have taken some of the newly hatched cats, which we have observed in years past (there are some tiny holes on leaves with no cats). Good luck Monarchs!!
