Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/05/2012

Number: 3

At the begining of the week the number at our feeders flucuated each day - from 12 for a couple of days (the majority were males) until Wednesday when a lone male guarded and fed from just one of our feeders. On Thursday there were two males feeding at opposite feeders but would often engage in battle - making contact with each other and knocking each off their flight pattern until the smaller bird was acutally knocked to the floor of our deck - he remained there for a few moments as if dazed and then he was back up to resume the fight!! Today we have another straggler to join our dwindling group - so the total we have today is three. When I hung the warm nectar this morning before daylight one was feeding within seconds after I left the feeder - it was actually dark(appr. 6:10 a.m.) and he remained at the feeder for a very long time as if he was starved. At the very break of dawn the second bird appeared. At 10:30 a.m. a third one appeared at the feeders making a trio to watch today. The weather forecast for the next few days for Greene County is in the 50º's in the day and low 30º's for night time temperature so I fear that our three will decide to wing their way on their southern trip. I continue to keep my feeders cleaned and filled with fresh nectar until I go at least 7-10 days without stragglers appearing - the latest I have ever had hummers at my feeders was in 2010 - until October 21st.
