Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/05/2012

Number: 26

After several days of rain, plus a foggy morning, the sun appeared at 11 AM bringing temp up to 70 degrees. Wind was east and very light (5 mph). I observed 25 Monarchs flying in across Salem Bay and arriving on Marblehead Neck between 2:50pm and 3:50pm. They flew in high - above the low fog bank - and dropped down to 6-10 feet when they reached land. They appeared to be flying faster and more steadily than the large number I had observed on 9/19. Todays Monarchs were flying alone or in pairs in a fairly regular stream about 2 minutes apart. They were not observed to stop and feed; and I did not see any butterflies circling each other in the 'playful'(?) manner of the earlier migratory groups.
