Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/05/2012

Number: 10

After a few rainy days earlier in the week we finally got some nice warm weather. With bright sunshine and temperatures in the lower 80's the butterflies were on the move. While at recess (1:30 pm) on the playground my class spotted a total of ten Monarchs flying from North to South from about 5 to 30 feet above the ground. When we made attempts net and tag the Monarchs they would quickly gain elevation to avoid capture. Later in the day about 5:00 pm, while heading north on 321 to Hickory, NC, I spotted three to four more heading the the North to South direction.
