Signs of Fall

Date: 10/10/2012

Number: 1000

I live in San Antonio, TX. I was waiting for my bus 10/10/12. It was 1500hrs. I began to notice a large swarm of something--moths or butterflies. I ignored it until never stopped. It was Monarchs at Lackland AFB, Military DR @ the Southern Gate. I observed the swarm until 1545 at the crossing before getting on the bus. The Monarchs were travelling at ground level from a semi-west to east direction. The wind was coming from SW. The Monarchs were being pushed or drawn everywhere by the car traffic. The swarm was at least a mile long. It was the distance to the next major bus stop--HWY 90 @ Military DR. There was sporadic, confused Monarch traffic further north at Ingram Mall. My bus trip ended at 1645hrs.

Editor's Note: Based on reports from experienced local observers, we assume the butterflies sighted were likely snouts rather than monarchs.
