Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/14/2012

Number: 300

Greetings again from Virginia's beautiful Eastern Shore! I went back to Assateague Island yesterday from about noon until 4:00PM to see what the monarchs were doing. My husband went with me this time because I had been so excited about my wonderful experience on Friday. This time, there was little or no wind, but it was another lovely warm day. There were fewer monarchs, but still many covering the goldenrod in more widely spread out spaces. We walked the whole large dune area between the ocean and Tom's Cove (probably about 10-15 acres) and certainly got a feel for what a real "all-you-can-eat" buffet this is for these awesome creatures! Bright yellow blooms accented by vibrant orange and black beauties...what a show!! Indeed, the numbers were not as large as Friday's but there were still many monarchs to see! With not so much wind, they did not need to fight so hard to enjoy their feast! Throw in a great picnic lunch for ourselves and a lovely quiet coastal setting as far as we could see...it was another wonderful day on Assateague Island! It looks like the monarchs are well on their way!
