Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/15/2012

Number: 500

I am reporting for Patsy Ransom who lives on Johnson fork Creek approximately 9 miles East of Junction. Here is what she saw:

Patsy called to tell me that she had 100's of Monarchs----at least 500 butterflies--roosting in her trees for the past two nights (beginning October 15th). Her description was they were mainly on the Arizona Ash and the elm and seemed to prefer them, but also gravitated to the Pecans.

She described a solid 3 feet of butterflies on one limb. She also said that this was the most she had seen in 5 years. She lives on Johnson Fork Creek in Kimble County and she does have regular roosts during migration. All of the butterflies left this morning (October 17) as soon as the sun hit them. A cold front is coming through tonight. She'll let me know if she gets some more.
