I was standing on the observation tower on the top of Mt. Mitchell (elevation 6,684'), NC, when a monarch flew by about 15' over my head; it was heading due south. This was about 3:00 in the afternoon of Tuesday, 16 October 2012. It was a beautiful, sunny day with the temperature (there) in the upper 50s).
