My friend, Captain Gerald Turan of the shrimp boat Predator, reports that he observed a number of Monarchs resting and nectaring on an "island" of water hyacinths in the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles due south of Vermillion Bay of Louisiana one day last week. He was quite amazed to see that these butterflies are very resourceful navigators and finders of nectar. I don't know the coordinates or the exact time of day, but I found that very exciting and wanted to share it for him because he does not have computer access.
The water hyacinths grow in inland waters like ponds, canals and bayous and are washed out to sea sometimes. He saw the butterflies on Sunday 10/21. The wind was out of the North and a front was passing through the area.
