While filling bird feeders for our regular migratory and winter birds I heard a buzzing sound which could only come from one source. A female Ruby Throated Hummingbird was visiting the sugar water feeder I had thankfully procrastinated in taking down! I quickly made some fresh with a higher sugar content and she drank and drank, sometimes just sitting there for long periods... hopefully fueling up for her trip south. I have never seen a hummer here this late. Third week in Oct. is normally the very last. Nights have been in the 20's, days 30's or 40's. No snow yet but expected this week. I Hope she does not intend to stay! An exciting... and concerning, sighting for me. Sorry, I did not think to take a photo, although she was here so long (mid-afternoon till dusk) I certainly had the opportunity.
