Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 11/04/2012

Number: 8

For the last 3 or 4 days I have seen from 4 to 8 Monarchs nectaring at the blue mist, milkweed, and salvia. A few have shown signs of long travel, but most have looked picture perfect, as if they've just emerged. I'm thinking they may be some of the eight caterpillars that were on the milkweed when we returned from vacation. They were quite large and I could not find them after a few days. The report from my neighbor is that there were not as many monarchs flying into our yard during the 14 days we were gone as the last two years. She and her boys watch as they fly over the fence and some years roost in the oak tree near the fence. Last year was a bumper crop. Sure hope that's not a thing of the past.
