Tulips PLANTED
Sightings report image

Date: 11/02/2012

Number: 1

Our tulip journey began for the second graders by observing the Red Emperor tulip bulbs. We used magnifying glasses and created labeled drawings of what we saw, what we felt and what we could smell or hear. Some students were wondering if these bulbs were examples of onions, garlic or shallots. Next, we measured the circumference and weighed the bulbs in order to make predictions. The data we collected was placed on several graphs. We continued by observing the inside of the bulb and once again drawing and labeling our observations. After that, we discussed what tulips would need in order to grow and bloom. Then we followed the protocol checklist from Journey North to ensure we were conducting a fair test. Planting took place on a sunny day on November 2, 2012 and we can't wait until our tulips emerge in the spring!
