Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 11/16/2012

Number: 1

I had 4 monarchs eclose 3 days ago from caterpillars I brought in from A. curassavica plants out back. Found 2 caterpillars just a few days ago and they are just about ready to pupate! This is the latest we have had monarchs growing and the latest dates for the pre-migration breeding monarchs to arrive that I've observed in 33 years. The low last night was 59.9dF caterpillars outside are maturing at about the same rate as those brought inside. One of those brought in late succumbed to something, but couldn't identify what. No tachinid flies and few other predators out and about at this time. One caterpillar brought from outside was/is the darkest I've ever seen. Brought him in much lighter, one day after temps in the high 40s. He's stayed dark through successive moults.
