We have observed a male red-breasted nuthatch coming to the bird feeder hanging at our living room window today. He is carrying sunflower seeds to a nearby elm to cache them under bark. We have not seen any of these handsome little birds here since April of 2008. They are exhibiting the irrupting behavior for which they are known, probably from a diminished food supply from areas farther north.
