Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 12/19/2012

Number: 1

I have stopped reporting our daily sightings, as our female ruby throated hummingbird appears to be going to stay with us here in Charlotte. She visits the feeders numerous times each day and tries to chase the other birds away when they come to one of "her" feeders. We enjoyed seeing her chase a male cardinal across the yard over the weekend and she dive bombed my husband when he took our big red ribbon holiday decoation out to hang. She is a delight to watch, but we worry how she will make it through our winter. We had hoped that she would "stock up" here and then decide to continue on her migration route, but it does not appear this will be the case since she has been here since mid November. Therefore, we are looking into the best way to heat one of her feeders so it will not freeze. Any suggestions from people that have had a hummer stay through the winter would be greatly appreciated.
