Today, January 3rd 2013, is the ice in date here at Walden Pond.
There was a thin skin of ice over at least 90% of Walden Pond for the first time this season.

After the initial "ice in" of 1/3/13 the pond thawed/ice out about 1/7/13 the ice then was "in" again 1/24/13. Today, 1/31/13, there is a lot of water on the pond but there is still ice. Temperatures are really fluctuating here in Eastern Massachusetts, and the pond is reflecting this.

Today, February 28th, 2013, we still have ice, although there are a few feet of open water at the edges on the north side of the pond. January 3, 2013, we had "Ice In I", by January 7, 2013, the pond thawed "Ice Out I" then froze for a second time by January 24, 2013, "Ice In II." We have had some thawing and refreezing since then.
