Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 01/27/2013

Number: 1

I saw a monarch on a sidewalk near a busy intersection (Koenig Lane and Woodrow). It had its wings closed and seemed very lethargic. I also noticed it had a torn wing. I picked it up and put it on my hand and it stayed there while I walked home--a few blocks. It tried to fly once and landed on a license plate on a parked car. Again, I picked it up and put it back on my hand and walked the rest of the way to my house. In my back yard, I put my hand down near a small yellow flower and it immediately hopped over to the flower and started feeding. It fed for about 10-15 minutes. Then I saw it flying around my yard and over the fence to the neighbor's yard. It was very energetic and its torn wing did not seem to impede its movements.
