Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 02/04/2013

Number: 1

I have had the good fortune of observing a ruby-throated hummingbird that chose to stay for the winter in Brentwood(Nashville), TN. Of course, my delight is constantly tempered with my worry! I realized this little guy was hanging around in late October but still assumed he was about to depart any day for warmer territory. By the time late November rolled around and he was still here, I started to get concerned. On December 8th I began logging his trips to the feeders...if I was home. I have never been more worried about cold, damp weather in my life! So far, this amazingly tenacious little creature has made it through 2 snows, tornado winds and 18 degree weather with high humidities. How in the world is THAT possible?? I have 6 little individual size feeders out for him at all times. Several mornings I awoke to all feeders frozen over and quickly ran out in the dark to grab and defrost them so he'd have his sugar water when he needed it most. He's a sneaky little devil too! He knows the minute I return with his fresh stock of goods and appears instantly! A few nights ago,my husband installed a heat lamp next to a few of the feeders so I have one less thing to worry about on those frozen over mornings. Today is Feb. 4th..and the little guy is still going strong and keeping me in constant awe of the small, beautiful wonders of this world.
