Tulips EMERGED
Sightings report image

Date: 01/31/2013

Number: 1

Ms. McComas' class, 3D, observed that 21 tulips had emerged and 1 had not, yet! The leaves were green, smooth, waxy and bumpy on the inside. They were also stiff, soft, leathery, sticky, grippy, rubbery and had purple on the edges. The small ones were pointed and the larger ones were spread apart. Things we wonder about; if the smaller ones will grow bigger, why some leaves are open and some are closed and why part of the leaf goes into the ground. We also wonder why there is purple on the edges of the leaves. We think they are funnel-shaped to hold water because they never know when they will get water again (adaptation). The tallest one is 10 cm and the shortest one is 1/2 cm.
