Tulips EMERGED
Sightings report image

Date: 01/31/2013

Number: 1

Ms. O'Neill's third grade class, 3A, observed that 23 tulips have emerged and one has not yet! Students noticed that the inside of the leaves were fuzzy, and that they felt soft, pointy and sticky. The leaves were green and the edges were purple and one tulip had a line of purple from top to bottom! Most also had white on the tip. Students observed that some tulips stored water in their leaves and decided that this was an adaptation. The insides looked like tongues. The tallest tulip was 11 cm. (# 16) and the shortest was 1 cm. (#10) and many heights inbetween. None of the 5 experimental tulips have emerged. We think that they are emerging early this year due to warm winter we have had.
