Tulips EMERGED
Sightings report image

Date: 02/06/2013

Number: 1

When we went out to our Tulip Test Garden on Wednesday, February 6th, 2013, we saw the first tulip bulbs to emerge in our gardens. The emerged buds looked twisted, almost like a taco. The top of each one was purple, red, and green. The tallest one was 6 centimeters. That probably means it was the first one. It also means it might have emerged the day before. Some were camouflaged and difficult to find. We think that protects them from animals like our bunnies, ducks and geese. In garden #1 we found 4, Garden #2, 6 emerged, Garden #3 we found 3 emerged, Garden #4 found 4 for a total of 17. We planted 100. Only 17 out of 100 so far. Two of our beds #1 and #4 are in the shade all day long while #2 and #3 are in sunlight most of the day. Group 1 and 4 are 3 meters away from the sun and remain moist while the sun beds are dry on the top. The shade beds had fewer bulbs emerge than one of the sunlight beds. We will observe to see if that continues to affect the tulips and their growth.
