We have had several requests to explain why our tulips have emerged as we are the only garden that has in the North East.
I put the question to my 2nd grade students yesterday who had been to group to discover the emergence. They had some ideas. One thought it was because we took such good care of our garden! Another thought it was because the other schools must have planted theirs in pots! Their ideas gave us a chance to revisit the planting protocols. I reminded them that to be part of the Journey North tulip study we all had to follow the same planting rules. They remembered how far down we dug (7") and that we had to plant the bulbs apart for each other (4"). I shared with them that I think it has to do with our garden being in a courtyard. This spot might offer more protection. The only thing that has me puzzled is we have been planting in this same location for 9 years now and this year our tulips are way ahead of others....
