Here in New Orleans, LA, as the weather has been reasonably mild without a freeze this winter, the monarchs have continued their lifecycles. We have had caterpillars, chrysalises and butterflies nonstop. We brought some caterpillars inside during the coldest days and others have lived outside. The first week of January we released three butterflies. Mid-January we released thirteen. Two left from their outside habitat the last week of January, three early in February and two more on February 13. Two more chrysalises are outside now. They are still green. One has been there about two weeks and the other about six days. All the butterflies left this location and at no time during this process did we actually observe any laying eggs.
We have an abundance of milkweed which is starting to flower again. It has provided food all winter for all the caterpillars that have continued to appear.
