Across Ontario at this time of year, waterfowl are flying north to their nesting grounds, stopping in southern areas to rest and feed. While seen throughout southern Ontario in small numbers, flocks of Tundra Swans stop in corn fields in southwestern Ontario along the north shore of Lake Ontario in large numbers. In some areas, they flocks may consist of hundreds or thousands of individuals. On March 10th, Richard Hardman wrote:

A very large flock of Tundra Swans is feeding in the fields just north of the Townsend Sewage Lagoons. I'm off to take photos.

Take Highway 6 to the north end of Jarvis. Then take the Townsend Parkway, North on county line then west on Stone Quarry Road. The Swans are in the files on the south side of the road about 1.5 Km west of Townsend.

Swans are still on the lagoons. We live about a kilometer away and they are coming in loud and clear. I estimate over 300 individuals. Birds were coming and going all day. There were many small flocks of 20 to 30 all around and also about Nanticoke. A friend posted a great photo of a large number of swans at Long Point. I'll try and include it as well.

Here are my photos. They were taken from about 200 yds away with a 600mm lens. I was also on lower ground than the birds. The last three picstures are from my backyard, about 500 yds from the birds.
