Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/12/2013

Number: 1

Our first remigrant of 2013! ... Just talked to my brother out at our pasture and he said about 4:30 a monarch flew up from the south on a general heading to N-NNE. He watched it as it was visting some of the A. asperula out in from of our RV, spending some time nectaring. After watching it a bit he was going to try and net it but the monarch decided differently! The pasture is about 65 miles ESE of San Antonio (TX) and 5 miles NE of Westhoff in DeWitt County, about 640 miles north of the sanctuaries ... 29.2464 -97.4224. This is on the primary route for the remigrants on their northbound trip. There were days the last three years in March where we, with monarch researchers, did actual counts of over one hundred monarchs passing a spot in the pasture in a day. We hear the number may be well under that this year. The drought down here will not make things better!
