During the renovation of our Children's Learning Garden, the Virginia Living Museum Education staff planted 50 Journey North tulips in the center of a raised bed that was surrounded with 2 levels of retaining bricks. About 25 extra Red Emperor tulips were planted around the edge of the bed near these bricks. In previous years, JN tulips were always planted along the edges of this central bed.
Staff noticed that the tulips on the edge of the bed emerged 1st, probably due to the warmth being absorbed and radiated to the edge of the bed by the bricks. The official JN tulips in the center of the bed did not emerge until 3-5-13 [see photo]. The other edge tulips emerged before February 12th and one has a bud on it as of 3-14-13.
The Children's Learning Garden was established with Journey North Tulips in Fall 1998.
