At 4:30pm EDST I observed a male Osprey returning to his nesting platform on Long Island Sound at the Target Rock National Wildlife Preserve. This is the 7th season that this bird has returned.
However, this pole and nesting platform was completely knocked down during the 95mph winds and tidal surge that occurred on this stretch of beach during hurricane Sandy. The pole and platform were re-erected several feet behind the high water mark so that the birds would no longer be disturbed by people. But the carefully built, large and messy nest (which included plastic grocery bags, ropes, grass and even a Barbie doll) was completely destroyed.
Nevertheless, this industrious bird had already started nest building and clumps of reeds and leaves were on the bare platform.
So far 3 of the approx 8 active nests are occupied. They are a bit late -perhaps because of the unusual storms, cold and snow this spring.
