Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 03/25/2013

Number: 1

Very cold morning, 39 degrees. My husband and I were having coffee and he spotted the male sitting on the branch of our sweet gum tree. There are no leaves on it, as yet. He then flew to my hummingbird feeder (hanging on front porch) and was drinking the nectar. I had put up two feeders about a week ago and use the sugar water recipe. Last year, we did have about 8-10 hummingbirds and I usually have about 13 feeders up, so they know where to look when they return. The males always arrive first.
There is a holly bush next to the feeder and I always clear a few branches of leaves, so they can sit in it and be protected. Last year, in early spring, I observed a male asleep on the holly branch, early in the morning.
