All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 03/31/2013

Number: 1

Our feeders were visited all day by American goldfinches, mostly eating black oil sunflower seeds from mesh feeders. They also feasted on sweet gum seed pods hanging above. One bright, breeding male was spotted, while all others were dull, transitioning from winter plumage. They shared the feeders with chickadees, titmice, a red-breasted nuthatch, house finches, sparrows, and a pair of downy woodpeckers. On the graound were mourning doves, cardinals, song sparrow, field sparrows, a pair of towhees, and many dark-eyed juncos. Three crows appeared at the end of the day to disrupt the show.
