Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/01/2013

Number: 1

This is a 40-acre, unofficial nature preserve with at least 4 milkweed species growing naturally on the premises. I have not seen much spring growth on the plants. On 1 April, around 0930, I spotted one adult Monarch flitting resolutely, not stopping to feed or rest, NE from our SW corner. It passed within about 10 feet of me, visible for about 10 seconds. The wings were faded, but not broken, no pieces missing. Flight did not seem erratic or unusual for a Monarch. Only one butterfly was observed. My cell phone is unable to take such a shot.
