Feeder out for 3 weeks today and first sighting around noon. I have been visited for years by ruby throat-ed birds and well recognize them. This one was different. While perched near the feeder on a tree branch, about 25-30 ft. away, in the shade, it appeared black or very dark with a narrow distinct band around the neck, perhaps 1/4" wide. At one point, it turned it's head and for an instant it's head seemed a deep or purplish red. I hope I can get to see it again for further observation.
(Could it even be possibly it was a black chinned variety? Seems doubtful but there are cases of vagrants)
