We went outside to our tulip test garden and were very shocked to see that 11 of our tulips have emerged! We still have 6 feet of snow in many parts of our school yard! The tallest stem was 9 cm. so we think that they probably emerged a few days ago. We also saw lots of ladybugs under the leaves. There was a worm wiggling around too. The outside temperature was -8 degrees. We measured the soil temperature and saw that it was 10 degrees celsius. We wonder how long it will be before they bloom?!
**Special Note**While we followed Journey North protocol to make every effort to plant bulbs in an area that best represents the general climate of our region, we DID plant our bulbs less than the recommended 15 feet from the school's foundation due to lack of another space. We believe this factor contributed to our early emergence and will be carefully watching Saskatoon's garden emergence as a comparison.
