Dozens of Yellow-shafted Flickers (woodpeckers) have been in my backyard now for a week. they seem to live in the tree line behind my house and peck on the dead trees early in the morning making an enormous racket. late in the day they will land in my yard and do some "anting" on the lawn. Beautiful bird. grayish heads with a red chevron on the back. Many have black mustaches on their chests and specked body. When they fly away I can see yellow beneath their wings. Lived here 20 years and had a few in the tree line pecking away, but never saw this many and eating on the lawn as well as the dead trees. Don't know where this flock came from this year?
