Was mowing the lawn and noticed a monarch do a quick check of the milkweed growing in my garden by the chimney. I think the mower scared it, so I'm hoping it will come back later. Hopefully I'll have eggs to report in the near future! :)

I was about 6-8 feet away, so I had a good view of color and size although it was flying. Eastern comas (and question marks – which I have raised) are smaller and have a somewhat erratic flight pattern compared to monarchs. They are also more brown. We also have Aphrodite butterflies, but they are also brownish. The butterfly I saw was distinctly orange/black and the correct size for a monarch. We have been monitoring/raising monarchs for several years. I am checking daily for eggs.
