Hummingbird, Other Species Sighted

Date: 04/22/2013

Number: 1

While banding on TUesday of this pasat week I caught a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird for the THIRD time in the same net and in the exact same panel location. I looked her over carefully and discovered she had a brood patch, the area on her belly with no feathers and increased vascularation while incubation eggs. I finally figured out that was her route back and forth as she is building her nest. The male does not help in anyway with nest building, egg incubating or feeding of young. She is a "single mother"! I may get her again but banding is just about over and her nest should be done by now. Maybe I will see her young later in the summer before they start their Journey South.
