Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/18/2013

Number: 1

For gen 1 monarchs, milkweed here as all about asperula. Thousands of plants are "everywhere," some getting quite large. But I for the record, I first noticed Green milkweed, A. viridis, today that is already several days old. They always emerge later than asperula and tend to grow only where soil has a bit more moisture. Asperula grow anywhere, even out of cracks in rock outcrops. Gen 2 Monarchs do not seem to lay eggs here before heading north (because Monarchs essentially disappear after Gen 2 bloom in May.) But viridis is likely used by Queens who are here in summer.
