We were hoping we would be seeing and hearing robins by this date. The weather has been beautiful, but chilly. The ground is still about 90% covered with at least a foot of snow, and the wind has been northerly, persistent, and cold. For a robin there is little available in terms of invertebrates; few insects and no worms working their way up to the surface yet. Even the robin's hardy cousin, the varied thrush, has made only a brief appearance in our area so far. It is kind of discouraging. However we can see that spring is slowly creeping forward and we are confident that very soon our robins, who left so long ago, will return to gladden our days with their presence and their song.
