Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/26/2013

Number: 1

Our house sits on a hill above Lotus Lake. All winter, we watch the ice and wait for the loons to return. Friday, April 26 was one of the first warmer days. The ice was melting.

Then I heard the loons. A few times that day, I saw them flying over the water. On Saturday, April 27th, I walked down to the lake and canoed in the morning. I estimate 6-8 loons swimming in pairs at several spots on Lotus Lake. The ice was out all around the edges and in a large section of the northern and southern sections of the water.

When I kept the canoe sideways to one pair of birds, they warily swam close enough for me to see their red eye with my binoculars. Later on Saturday, the ice was completely melted. A motor boat churned up the water the same day.

On Sunday, I heard fewer pairs of loons, but at least one couple is still here.
