Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/16/2013

Number: 1

Little girls are returning to the habitat--resident boys arrived the evening of 5/14 and the girls appeared today. Residents' arrival is almost a week late, (mother nature must told them to stay in the South a little longer in order to avoid our cold, wet, spring). In previous years our resident hummers always arrive between May 6 and May 8th. 5 Humm Zinger feeders have been available in the habitat since April 21st--we've had travelers visit, feed, and continue on their journey, during this time. Tonight a small female was feeding near white pines in the East habitat, 8:15 PM, 59 degrees, winds 18 mph. Welcome home, sweetie--cat tail fluff, and moss are available for nesting materials, and there will be warm nectar served in the morning at daybreak.
